Cool and Original Leopard Gecko Names

When naming an unusual pet such as reptile, you can look well beyond the constraints of typical pet names and derive new names from various inspirational sources.

Dinosaur Names

Dinosaur names are a good example of unique names.

Leopard geckos sort of look like tiny dinosaurs, right?

Well, cool and unique leopard gecko names can be derived from scientific dinosaur names – and fit them perfectly.

  • Raptor (from Velociraptor)
  • Bronto (from Brontosaurus)
  • Rex (T-Rex)
  • Spino (Spinosaurus)
  • Allo (Allosaurus)
  • Dilo (Dilophosaurus)
  • Dread (Dreadnoughtus)
  • Ankyl (Ankylosaurus)
  • Dino (general dinosaur reference)

Some of these names sound suitable for males (e.g ‘Raptor’), while others (‘Dilo’) can be considered unisex.

Perhaps a bit less original – but still cool – is the option of naming your leo after famous movie dinosaurs.

If you are looking for a though dino iteration, there is that bunch of Velociraptors from ‘Jurassic Park’:

  • Blue
  • Charlie
  • Delta
  • Echo

If you are looking for a cute dino association, there are probably not many cuter dinosaurs than the crew from ‘The Land Before Time’:

  • Cera
  • Chomper
  • Ducky
  • Littlefoot
  • Petrie
  • Ruby
  • Spike

Last but not least, if you are looking for a terrific name or have an exceptionally large leo (Giant morphs), you might want to consider the most famous dinosaur-like movie monster: Godzilla.

The Japanese Godzilla brings us to another interesting name category.

Japanese Names

Let’s make this clear right at the start – leopard gecko’s origins don’t have anything to do with Japan.

However, because of their specific large eyes and constant smiles, they do bring to mind characters from Japanese comics (‘Manga’) and cartoons (‘Anime’).

Indeed, at the time I fell for leos, I was quite an anime fan. A coincidence?

You can use this and get a lot of inspiration from searching through Japanese pet names. They sound unusual and beautiful, and they can become suitable leopard gecko names as well.

I’ve picked ten names for leo girls and another ten for leo boys based on the way they sound, and of course, their meanings.

Girl leo Japanese names

  • Aimi (‘Lovely Beauty’)
  • Amaya (‘Night Rain’)
  • Aya (‘Colorful Design’)
  • Chika (‘Scattered Flowers’)
  • Hikari (‘Radiance’)
  • Hiromi (‘Abundant Beauty’)
  • Kabuki (‘Japanese Theatre’)
  • Kioko (‘Happy’)
  • Nami (‘Wave’ – interesting for morphs with wave-like lines/marks)
  • Yoko (‘Sunny’ – ideal for yellow and orange leo morphs)

Boy leo Japanese names:

  • Daiki (‘Great Glory’)
  • Hoshi (‘Star’ – unisex name: can be used for females too)
  • Jiro (‘Second Son’)
  • Judo (‘Fighter’)
  • Koko (‘Short’ – unisex name: can be used for females too)
  • Nao (‘Docile’)
  • Norio (‘Man of Love’)
  • Ryu (‘Dragon’)
  • Taiki (‘Large’)

Naming Your Leopard Gecko: General Advice

  • Considering the characteristics of your pets when you are picking a name can be helpful. These can be both physical traits (e.g. color) and character traits.
  • Unless you have a special reason, avoid giving your pet leo a human name typical for your region. You might get some weird looks from new acquaintances if you have to tell them: ‘Oh my, I have a lizard that has the same name as you!’… And you would probably feel bad about avoiding the topic altogether.
  • Since your leos don’t react to their own names like dogs or cats do, you can always change the name if you realize that the first one does not really suit your pet. However, this can feel a bit wrong after some time has past.
  • Unless you have a very clear idea from the start, it is better wait a bit and get to know your new pet before deciding on a name. He doesn’t need a name to get an ID, or even an official health record like other pets, so there is no need to rush.

  1. I am getting a rain leopard gecko and can’t decide if I want to name it a flower if it’s a girl or something else

  2. Hello! I have a baby leopard gecko (Calico firefox) that i named Firefox after it’s morph and since it’s a baby it’s colours will change, I kind of forgot that part when I bought it. So I was watching a video about baby leopard geckos since I did months of research on adult geckos not babies. it brought up the fact “Its colours will change”. So i got curious and looked up what it would look like as an adult. and It’s current name is firefox (or Littletoes) So I am currently thinking of re-naming it, and that is why i’m on here. I was thinking of the names “Yoko” (sunny), “Littlefoot” (after it’s nickname) or “Bumblebee” we do not know it’s gender since it is too young. I would like your opinion since I cannot make a choice myself XD.

    1. Hi Sophie,
That’s an awesome one! I love the fact it could have a double meaning – one for Top Gun fans, and completely another for the rest (stirring up some confusion by naming one type of animal after another is always amusing; although I haven’t done it myself, a leo rescued by Snake Discovery crew was named Cat after rehoming and I think it’s so cool!). Congrats!

  3. I love leopard geckos they are the cutest thing ever. mine is named bronze, and she has a derpy smile. she is 15 to 17 years old. I blow her a good night kiss every day and I say “happy hunting. see you in the morning, my little bundle of love.” I also compliment her every day because geckos deserve all that love. I will ALWAYS find time for her. see ya!

  4. I have a yellow leopard gecko named Cylvester Clyde (Sil-vest-er)! It’s yellow and when he was little it had teal spots above its eyes, which is why I chose it. I got it on November 16th, 2020, it was a birthday present. The reason I am calling him/her is because I originally wanted it to be a boy, but I honestly think that she/he’s a girl now! I have no idea.

    1. Hi Taylor,

The best way to tell if your gecko is a boy or girl is by looking closely at the areas before and after its vent (bum). Males have pre-anal pores which are small dots that start before the vent and run down the underside of the back legs. They also have two bulges after their vent (on the tail side) where the hemipenes are located.

    2. My Leo’s name is Millie she is a normal Leopard gecko, and my other leo is named hope, but I am looking to change his name. He is a Halloween mask leopard gecko. Any suggestions would by awesome!

  5. My 2 year old leopard gecko’s name is Apollo. And with that name, nothing can make my baby boy cuter.

  6. I want a leopard gecko really badly, and I’ve asked for one for like 3 years. And my parents still won’t buy one. Idk how to convince them to haha I need help🥺

  7. i have three geckos!!! one i’ve had for a couple months name Yoshi (yes from mario). and then i just rescued two geckos that i’ve renamed to petrie and Yoko (from this list) Petrie LOVES to screech during her shed and Yoko is a fancy tail morph, so hes bright yellow and orange all over with a black and white tail! love all my babies~
